About the event

Every year, the Inland Waterways Association runs a major event during the summer. In 2011, it's at Shobnall Fields, Burton on Trent, on the Trent and Mersey Canal. For the first time for a long while, it will be from the Friday to the Sunday of the last weekend in July, rather than the Late Summer Bank Holiday.

Like a lot of other volunteers, we'll be there for three weeks, starting on Saturday 16th July. Our main contribution will be editing and producing the daily newsletter which is circulated to the boaters, campers and exhibitors at the Festival, starting on the Thursday before.

Note: this is an entirely personal account of our time helping to set up and run the Festival. It's not an official IWA site; please use the link above for that.

First Monday

The fine weather continued yesterday, as did the work on site. After our first thing newsletter and blog session, we joined the WRG volunteers as they came in for their first break of the morning. On the way, we saw the swing bridge, which controls access to the lake, being opened so as to allow the exit of one of the work boats with its work platform alongside.

Although numbers are now much reduced, productivity remained high. The fence line which had had to be adjusted was completed, and much of the rest of the work involved improving the access route to the main entrance to the Festival. Uneven ground was levelled, undergrowth strimmed back and some potential hazards in the form of broken staples and ends of barbed wire removed from some fence posts.

As we were finishing this, it became apparent that another part of the fenceline needed to move. For some reason best known to the Site Director, although it was always apparent that this bit was in the wrong place, we had been instructed to put it there, and now its adjustment was urgent to allow the plumbers to run a supply pipe along it.This took up a bit of time after lunch, but when completed was hopefully where it will stay until take down.

Once more, we had a relaxed end to the day – things have been moving so smoothly, the WRG team keeps getting ahead of the supply of jobs. This will not last, on previous experience, but by the time the flow of work increases, we should be into the second week, with many more bodies available.

Three wise monkeys?

We’ve moved into the lake onto our mooring for the duration. This was quite an event in itself, but the tale properly belongs to tomorrow’s post.
